Smoking in Bed

| This is the front yard. A level area of
woodchips surrounded on two sides by a hedge to break the wind and — more importantly to Atlanta residents — hide the homeless from view.
The woodchips are the homeless person’s mattress; he or she sleeps on
the ground, on the discarded cigarette butts and pigeon feathers or
anything else thrown down. Woodchips, cardboard and a blanket open to
the wind and rain are the best the homeless can hope for in the rich,
growing city of Atlanta.
